I recently had the pleasure of attending the annual Conscious Capitalism Summit. It was held in beautiful Lake Arrowhead, California and was hosted by the Conscious Capitalism Alliance. The 2 ½ day event was filled with conversations among fabulous business and thought leaders from around the country. We talked about what we are doing to make a greater impact by running our businesses in a “conscious” way – meaning with a greater purpose than just profits. I joined John Mackey from Whole Foods, Doug Rauch (former president of Trader Joe’s) and Lawrence Koh (CEO of International Diversified Products) in a conversation about how each of our companies operates in a way that balances the needs of all stakeholders – and how we have been able to scale this approach as our companies have grown.

For The Container Store, our number one stakeholder – as you’ve heard me say many times – is our employees. For other companies, it may be their customers or their suppliers. But the common thread between all of our companies is that we’re working to ensure everyone involved in our business succeeds – it doesn’t have to be a “zero sum game” where someone has to lose in order for someone else to “win.” It’s somewhat counter intuitive to what many people think can be a profitable way to run a business. In fact, it’s not only profitable, it’s fun to nurture and develop these mutually-beneficial relationships…and if I hadn’t been able to lead our company for the past 32+ years with this approach, I’d probably be a fly fishing guide somewhere in Colorado.

We also hosted many people from this wonderful organization several months ago at our headquarters in Dallas to share more about what Conscious Capitalism means to The Container Store. We put together a fun highlight video from the event that, if I must say, does a pretty good job of summing up what this way of doing business means to our company, our employees, customers, vendors, community and shareholders. I hope you’ll take a moment to watch and also visit the Conscious Capitalism Alliance web site to learn more.
