Knitting Hats for Hundreds and Hundreds of Babies!

Knitting Hats for Hundreds and Hundreds of Babies!

Our Distribution Center employee Mary C. learned to knit a few years ago after a co-worker taught her the craft over their lunch hour. She especially loves to make soft baby hats and blankets to keep brand new babies snuggly and warm!

While she has always enjoyed giving the hats as gifts to her friends and family, she began making many, many more than she could give away – up to 14 a week! “I really enjoy knitting because it’s something that you can do whenever you happen to have time, and it’s very relaxing,” said Mary.

Mary just happens to eat breakfast every morning with another colleague, Will G., whose wife works for the American Red Cross. After hearing about Mary’s extra hats, he asked whether she’d be willing to donate them to the Red Cross to be given to babies born at area hospitals. Mary was thrilled to hear that her infant caps would be put to good use and immediately agreed!

Over the last couple of years, she’s donated more than 1,500 hats and baby blankets to local hospitals through the Red Cross. This benefits both the hospitals, since it helps with their budgets, as well as the infants who receive the soft, hand-made wool caps. “The biggest joy for me is imagining how happy each little baby’s parents are when they’re given a cute hat before they’ve even left the hospital,” said Mary.

We’re so very proud to have Mary on our team here at The Container Store!
