Leaders We Love: Oprah Winfrey

Oprah is a Mississippi girl of little means that decided to make Chicago her home town when she was called upon to rescue what was called the “AM Chicago” morning show. That show soon became The Oprah Winfrey Show.

I live in Chicago, where Oprah did her talk show for 25 years. Being in this city gives you more opportunities to be in the presence of this media mogul who inspires the world to “Live your best life” every day. I’m inspired by her shows, books and magazines. In her wildest dreams, I’m sure Oprah couldn’t have believed she would influence so many people to consciously think about the purpose of their life and the responsibility we each have to make a difference in the world.

And – I love that Oprah loves The Container Store’s products as much as I do!! Oprah understands the joy that our products can bring to someone’s life (which she experienced herself after receiving one of our letter boxes from her beau, Steadman). It’s so exciting that our co-founders, Kip and Garrett, had the opportunity to visit The Oprah Winfrey Show and share more with her about our wonderful products – plus, we’re lucky enough to still occasionally have our products featured in O, The Oprah Magazine!

I feel like there are so many similarities between The Container Store’s and Oprah Winfrey’s brand. We are a conscious business focused on a higher purpose beyond profits and both have created a culture that supports, engages and builds trust between company leaders and employees – really, all of the organization’s stakeholders. And the personal growth that we experience as employees makes us better salespeople, parents, spouses and neighbors. We strive each day to make a difference in the lives of all the customers in our stores, by giving them the valuable gift of organization, which ultimately saves them time. And we’re passionate about growing our company – a company with vision, heart and a great conscience.
