On April 29 a series of tornadoes swept through an area just 60 miles east of Dallas. In the aftermath there were dozens of injuries and many more local residents who had their homes and businesses destroyed. Such a terrible situation shocked and saddened those of us at The Container Store, so we decided to step in and help where we could.
The residents affected by the storm were in need of containers to pack up their belongings, so we gathered cases of storage totes and enlisted the help of our local employees to deliver them. Our first stop was the Canton Fairgrounds, where a large donation collection center had been set up to support the relief efforts. Next, we stopped at the First Baptist Church of Fruitvale, the site of another local collection center.
Andy, one of our drivers, was dismayed by all the damage caused by the tornadoes. “It was an incredibly heart-wrenching experience. I’ve lived in Texas my entire life and have only seen news reports and pictures of tornado damage, but unless you witness it firsthand, you cannot comprehend the devastation. However, I also witnessed the great support given to the community. The small bags with a toothbrush and toothpaste with tiny notes and uplifting messages. The cases of water and Gatorade, cleaning supplies and food. People were waving as I drove by and all of the smiles were humbling. As I was waiting in traffic, a man from Canton asked me to thank my boss for what we did for his community,” Andy continued. “But I feel that encompasses a lot of the people at The Container Store. I’m so thankful to work for a company that not only takes care of their employees, but also takes care of their community.”
We offer a BIG thanks to all the employees who volunteered their time to help our neighboring communities!
