The Container Store has never had any written rules about how we decide which products to carry, because our President and Chief Merchandising Officer Sharon Tindell believes that rules would limit the imagination, creativity, and intuition her team brings to the job. But it’s safe to say that we place a high premium on clever, well-designed items that are, most of all, extremely functional. “Form should follow function,” Sharon likes to say, and “Aesthetics are important, but secondary to functionality.” We work with some of the best vendors in the business who truly deliver on this idea, allowing us to offer a perfectly curated collection of products that are both beautiful and useful.
Recently, Fortune Magazine wrote an article highlighting our vendor Simplehuman, and its Founder and CEO Frank Yang. In it they said, “Few people would think to apply their spirit of invention to the humble kitchen garbage can. But Frank Yang did just that and created a new category: the most prosaic household items reconceived with panache and stainless steel.” We couldn’t agree more – after all, we know better than anyone that even a trash can really can make you smile!
