Why Have an Attitude of Gratitude?

Thank you! Danke. Merci! Gracias. No matter how you say it, showing gratitude is a powerful way to make those around you feel appreciated.

We’re often asked how we show our employees at The Container Store that they’re loved and appreciated, and our answer is always simple: we say “thank you.” Truly – it doesn’t take a big budget or a complicated program…we’ve found that the most effective way to make employees feel engaged is to genuinely thank them for their hard work.

For this year’s We Love Our Employees Day, we left Post-It notes and markers around our Stores, Home Office and Distribution Center so employees could take a minute to show one another a little love. Though the act of jotting a down a quick note seemed simple, it had a profound effect on all of us. Nearly two months later, those sticky notes still appear on desks, lockers, and doors as reminders that our colleagues value us.

Why Have an Attitude of Gratitude?

Best of all? Showing gratitude doesn’t just benefit the person who receives it. Becoming a person who regularly acknowledges the contributions of others can actually be a tremendous advantage in the workplace (and at home!). Think about your own reactions when you feel appreciated. We are usually more willing and even eager to help someone who appreciates it. We instinctively gravitate toward people who see us as valuable contributors.

Try it out. Take a minute out of your day today to thank a colleague. Say it face-to-face, send an email, write a Post-It note! If a colleague has really gone above and beyond, consider copying his/her boss on your thank you email. Thank someone every day. It won’t take long before you’re hooked like we are.
