Three years ago my father passed away from a rare form of cancer called cutaneous T-Cell lymphoma. He received his diagnosis and treatment at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital and Comprehensive Cancer Center, where his wonderful doctor introduced us to an event called Pelotonia – a grass-roots bicycle tour with one goal: to end cancer.
It’s the largest cycling event in the country in terms of participation, with 6,700 riders from 42 states and three countries. Additionally, Pelotonia has over 3,000 “virtual riders” – or fundraisers – and 100% of every dollar raised is donated directly to cancer research. It’s an amazing event that’s truly making a difference! In five years, Pelotonia has raised over $55 million.
In memory of my Dad, I started riding with Pelotonia in 2011. This year, our Columbus Store team had been talking about ways that we could get more involved in supporting our local community, so I invited everyone at our store to participate with me!
Riding in Pelotonia is no small commitment – each cyclist chooses the distance that he or she will ride, then must raise a predetermined amount while working to get in shape for the big event. So, I was extremely excited and touched that 14 of my store teammates joined in the ride toward One Goal! You can watch our video to hear more from each member of our team.
Even if they didn’t choose to ride, every single person in our store contributed to our fundraising efforts in some way – either by signing up as a Virtual Rider, or helping to organize bake sales, a garage sale, gift party and other activities we planned to raise money for this great cause. We even set up our own fundraising page to keep track of our progress and keep us motivated.
The weekend of August 9th, our “Team The Container Store” peloton rode in Pelotonia 2013. So far we have raised a total of $14,800 for cancer research. Each rider on our team pledged to ride between 25-100 miles – meaning that collectively, we rode nearly 500 miles to help end cancer!
