A friend of ours recently told us we just had to check out this TEDx Toronto video presentation by Drew Dudley. And how right they were! You should definitely watch the six-minute video – it’ll not only make you smile, but might redefine the way you think about leadership.
Do you consider yourself a leader? If not, maybe you should. Drew’s message is all about how we often change others’ lives without realizing it – that our small gestures (or “lollipop moments” as he calls them) can sometimes have a giant impact on another person’s life.
At The Container Store, our CEO Kip calls this concept “WAKE” – like a boat’s wake. It’s the idea that everything you do, and don’t do, affects others around you so much more than you realize. This is what being a conscious business is all about! If each and every one of our employees is aware of their WAKE, just imagine the difference that makes – in how they support and develop their colleagues, how they serve our customers with care, how they create relationships with our vendors, and contribute time and attention to the community.
Drew says “we need to redefine leadership as being about lollipop moments – how many of them we create, how many of them we acknowledge, how many of them we pay forward, and how many of them we say ‘thank you’ for.” We couldn’t agree more.
Tell us about your lollipop moment! Who’s changed your life for the better without even realizing it?
